Court records are public. Almost nobody has counted them for the people they are about.
Every year around 4.7 million debt collection lawsuits are filed in the United States. Roughly one in four civil cases is now a company suing an individual. The company has a lawyer essentially every time. Fewer than one in ten defendants does.
About seventy percent of the people sued never respond. When nobody responds the company wins automatically, and the court never checks whether it owns the debt or whether the amount is right. That judgment then follows a person for years — wages, bank account, credit.
Roughly a quarter of these cases are dismissed when the person simply files one page. The page is free. The information needed to write it has always been public. It was just never assembled for the person holding the summons.
